I like those variants, especially the ys and Js for the feet, but the
head still doesn't look quite right.  So I thought I'd try something
similar in a different size.

I went for smaller, for some reason.  Masochism, perhaps.  Here are
two variants that turned out okay.

Out of context, they're probably not very recognizable though.  A
little more diddling might help that..
