In Japanese, these characters read as _KARA-TE_.

The upper character is _KARA_ and means _empty_ or
_the sky_.

The lower character is _TE_ and  means_hand_.

They wrote _KARA-TE_ means _empty hand_, but
in this case, _KARA-TE_ is Japanese fighting
sport _KARATE_. It's Japanese style Kang-fu.
