The folks who will eat them will be those who believe they are "doing
something to save the environment" by not eating meat, all the while the
collectors are wiping out cicadas.

Hmmm, I remember some folks suggesting that they could/should be eaten back
when we had an emergence event around 15 years ago.  Those things were
everywhere.  They were warning about another emergence here this year, but
I have not seen or heard any this year.  Only time I have heard any was
when I traveled about an hour west.  It was so hot that day, they didn't
come out and start making noise until sundown.
