Most N-gauge layouts I've seen are done up to resemble large open desert vista
s.  It's tiny enough to make long runs of cars look cool.  I'm an HO fan. 
The traditional O scale stuff tends to be out of scale and very toy-ish, and
high rail O is meant to remedy that, howeveer the rail height is out of scale
to handle the tighter turn radii that exists on O tracks.  High rail is
equivalent to a real rail being 1 foot tall.
