Yeah, I have noticed that myself too.

Sometimes, the 2 player variant is better than the main variant, or at least
novel enough to be its own cool thing.

Cyclades comes to mind. The two player variant has each player try to bribe two
greekl gods at once so there is a lot of double guessing involved. Are you
familiar with that game?
