Yep, I think I've tripped up on most of these too at one stage, but you do
learn the rules, eventually. :)  As for those switches, I just pull up a copy
of one of the many excellent references available online, when I need help with
specifics of syntax.  Beats my memory, which tends to favour concepts over
detail.

Same with anything where there's a lot of alternatives to learn.  There's
