Is there a specific book you're reading or you just want to dink around in
Basic?
The C64 is what I grew up with.  It was extrememly popular and therefore you'll
get the most support there.
However the basic is kind of crap actually.  Almost anything you want to do
with the hardware requires a complex series of peeks and pokes whereas other
systems (Apple II, TI-99/4a (extended basic), even TRS-80) had basic commands
like graphics, plot, sound, joystick, etc...

The basic on the C128 has a lot more commands so there's that.
