  The Community Emergency Response Team (C.E.R.T.) D-Star Net normally
meets each Thursday night at 8:30pm, U.S. Central Time, on the W4LET
Repeater system in the Memphis, Tennessee area...and on D-Star Reflector
58A. Thanks to the folks at W4LET for the use of the repeater, and to
Ken Adkisson, WB4FAY, and all those who work with Reflector 58, the
Alabama Reflector.

  The net is a Directed Net, and all calls will go through Net Control.
You do NOT have to be a CERT member to check into the net...only to
have an Amateur Radio License with D-Star Privileges. In the United
States and its territories, that's the Technician Class license, or
above (General, Advanced, or Amateur Extra).

  In short, Novice Class licensees are NOT eligible to check in, as
the frequencies and privileges are not in their license class. Plus,
the Novice and Advanced Class Licenses were discontinued in 2000...but
holders of these licenses may continue to operate within their
privileges, and renew their licenses at the appropriate time. Those
holding Novice Class licenses can gain these privileges by passing
the Technician Exam at a license exam sesison. Plus, since they
already have a callsign, once they pass the Technician exam, they
can use their new privileges immediately.

  CERT educates individuals about disaster preparedness for hazards
that may impact their area, and trains them in basic disaster response
skills...such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization,
and disaster medical operations.

  Using training learned in the classroom, and during exercises, CERT
volunteers can assist others in their community, following a disaster,
when professional responders are not immediately available.

  CERT volunteers are also encouraged to support emergency response
agencies, by taking an active role in emergency preparedness projects.
Training is free, and the life you save, may indeed, be your own.

  The net each week includes a quick overview of significant weather
advisories for the MidSouth, and a Training Presentation, followed by
Questions/Comments about the presentation, then going through the log
of checkins, and asking for comments from net participants.

  Daryl Stout, WX1DER, from Little Rock, Arkansas, is Net Control on
the first Thursday of the month...with Rick Pinelli, KA2BSM, the Net
Control on the other Thursdays. Rick does a lot of work with CERT in

  To checkin to the net, quick key your rig or connecting device
(i.e. DV Dongle), one time, for one second, when the frequency is
clear. Net Control will pick you up from the log. If you are short
time, please advise Net Control that you are "in and out", and they
will mark you as such, acknowledge you, and you can secure your station
at your leisure.

  Stations are requested to stay on frequency until the net closes, as
a courtesy to their fellow amateurs...but if they need to secure their
station early, they just need to advise Net Control of such, and they
will be marked as "out".
