Old Computer Challenge 2023 - Day Four

Display adventures
------------------

The backlight of my twenty year old IBM ThinkPad R31 is not in
the best of shape. Sometimes after boot it is a bit dim, but
otherwise perfectly usable. And sometimes it is quite dark
after boot, and I have to get really close to read the text on
the screen.

The first time the R31 boots after connecting the power brick,
I have to set the date. Both the backup battery as the normal
battery are very dead.

This morning, after booting, the screen was very dark. Mostly
out of memory I managed to set the date, hit F10 and let the
machine boot again. Still, a dark screen.

I used my X201 as a display for the R31, logged in over ssh.

After an hour or so, I had to do some stuff, brought the
machine down and disconnected the power brick.

Late this afternoon, just before diner, I connected the
machine to the power brick, booted, and ... there was the dim
but perfectly workable display again :)

This is only day four, so we have some days to go ...

I hope I can keep using the R31 with my hands on the keyboard,
and not have to use another system over ssh to see what I am
doing :)

Other stuff
-----------

Today did the usual stuff, IRC, Gnus for use-net, RSS-feeds and
mailing lists, and write a new Gopher post and Gemini post :)
