Dolmar 116si

Guy I know through internet only sent me a video of his dolmar
116si cutting up some firewood. He lives maybe 40mins south of
me and is a member here but dont have a youtube account.

A 116Si and a Dolmar 6000i use the same piston and cylinder but
the brake is a little different
The 116Si is 60cc and the 120Si is the same chainsaw with 68cc

Maybe slightly more so?
The main difference with the 116S is there is a pressed on worm
for the oil pump drive so it has a full time oil pump instead of
one that only runs when the chain is spinning like on the 6000.
I think this was more of a EPA thing than of any real
usefulness.
The oil pumps themselves on all the Dolmars in the last 20 years
that you and I would be using are the same design. from the 111
to the 7900.
The 111/115 also changed to part time oiler when the 6000/6800
came out in '97 and the 116S/120S was discontinued
In '99 they made the 111 the same closed port cylinder as a 115
and I think that was the end of the 115?

The 116S, 120S, 6000, & 6800 all had the same 36mm stroke as
the Husky 365 Special and 372XP but the bores were smaller.
The closed ports on the Dolmars were of the old style upper and
lower window design using a windowed piston. The lower transfers
were not in the base flange area of the cylinder and crankcase.
Some of the Stihls were this way. You cannot do as much porting
on these as all the port dimensions, piston skirt width and
lengths were all mathematically worked out to coincide with the
port spacing on the cylinder. They ran pretty good they way they
were.

Thanks for taking the time to upload and posting that link for
me.
Just a stock 116si, with a 16" bar, 3/8" full chisel 7-pin.
Probably had a tankful through it before I shot this, so not a
fresh out of the box sharpening. I like to run my rakers in the
.045-.050 range, and thats about what these are. The wood was
Ash, about 14-15" at the big end, tapering to 11-12" by the end
of the vid. I am no racer, this isnt a special video or
anything. Just the way I cut and run my saws everyday. I have a
soft spot for the 116si and 120si.
660mag...you seem to know more about these old dolmars than I
do. I have a few 116si's that are ported, and your right, wasnt
much that could be done. Just a tad wider, and really just
smoothing out casting lines. The few I did, I raised the ports
just a tad too, to compensate for taking the base gasket out to
get squish down to 0.020-0.025.

The 116Si usually had a Kobelschmidt cylinder whereas the 120Si
cylinder was a Mahle. But they were identical except for bore
and the fins being slightly larger on the 120Si. The external
fins varied on all these cylinders over the years. There were
ones with and without fins under the exhaust ports and there
were some with the fins removed to the left of the spark plug to
allow room for the spark plug wire.
The piston cylinder sets for the 116S/120S were interchangeable
but are no longer available. There is a guy that frequents this
site that has some new old stock pistons for the 120S/6800
available.
Be careful comparing the 116/120 with the "S" versions as there
were differences.

Never ran anything but the SI's. I imagine the supers were good
runners too, and would snag one in a heartbeat if the price was
right. But the 116/120 non-S versions dont interest me.
I wouldnt mind having a 114 and a 119 to round out my
collection, but dont see them that often. And I hardly ever use
my 112 or 117. The 117 is quite strong, but its no 116SI. And
honestly, the 112 reminds me of a 029, overweight and slow :)
My go-to saws are my 115i and 540 for trimming, and a pair of my
116si's for bucking. And I'll take my 6400/8400 along if I know
I'm getting into some big wood. But dont use it unless I have
to. Its easier to maintain 16" B&C's than a 24". I really do
have a soft spot for the dolmars ;D

I forgot to mention that I love the sound of the dolmars.
Especially the older ones, and even the smaller ones. The stihls
and huskys are just too "high-pitched" for me. I like the deeper
tones and throaty sound of the dolmar.

Those are some good Dolmars to be going to. I have the 115i,
5105, 6800, & 7900 . . . That gets the job done.
