My 3400 parts saw I bought to cover the 4000 needs someday.
Today for the first time I noticed 3400 had the 4000 high top
       air filter cover etc.

You know what the sad part is???

Besides measuring the bore. Is there a way to tell this is a
       3400 with just a 4000 top cover and not a 4000 with a 3400
       recoil cover?
If I end up measuring bore. Anyone know off hand what the
       bores of 3400 3700 4000 were?

Dug up some of Nik, Mark, Mike and others info.
       4000 bore 49.2mm
       3700 47.7mm
       3400 46mm
4000 the recoil pulley is a little different to account for the
difference in starter dogs 530026371 for the 4000 and 530026487
       for the 3400.
Saving some info. Homelite 410 ring 93216 1.937 in. (49 mm)

And of course the 4000 muffler has the side slit in it.
That is the LEAST sure way to tell though because they are the
       easiest thing to replace.
I have also found that the compression is an "indicator" in the
       really clean low hour saw.
3400s USUALLY carry 120-130 broken in
3700s are closer to the 130-140 range
4000s are usually in the 140-150 range.
Naturally these aren't "for certain" but if you are just
checking or suspecting it is one more clue to look for.
There are some other things too like the heavier style AV mounts
and the clutch cover/side brace but they could have been changed
very easily over the last 30 years.

this 4000 that wigglesworth ported for me.
It is reallly an impressive saw!

Somebody wanted to see these pics.
1 of the inside of recoil and flywheel, 1 of the S clip, and 1
of the 2 bar studs, same length studs 1 appears to have been
buggered up on the threads end and this was how someone had
fixed it in the past. It functions as should and never a
problem due to the poor ugly bar stud.

       Well I B.
I knew the 4000 was missing 1 long upper rear recoil bolt and I
looked at the parts saw pic and there it is. 4000 now has all
it's recoil bolts. Something so simple and I over looked it.
