Romero did too....[emoji23] [/quote] Wish I was still in the boxing scene and in the DMV. Would love to go watch Davis train. One huge advantage of boxing at the University of Maryland as compared to other schools we competed against (like Penn State, Loch Haven, etc...), we were in a hot bed of amateur and professional boxing talent and no shortage of gyms to visit/train at. And at the time, the school had forbid us to do any sparring on campus, so we had no choice but to go to DC gyms to train in order to get sparring in. Had the opportunity to be in the gym training with top amateur and professional talent. And even got to spar with them too. Invaluable experience. Some invaluable a s s whoopings too, lol. I remember my last semester at school, due to my class schedule, 2 of my gym days had to be middle of the afternoon, when it was usually pretty empty. A friend of mine was a big boxing fan, and asked if he could tag along with me to the gym, just to be a fly on the wall and watch. He'd never been in a boxing gym before. So I say sure. It's usually just me and maybe 1 or two other people in there anyway at that time, so you won't even have to worry about finding a spot to stay out of the way or anything. So I'm warming up, and the head trainer comes over and says that Dominic Wade is coming in today to workout, and asks if I'd be up for sparring with him. Dominic at the time was one of the best middleweight amateur prospects in the country at only 17 years old, and an olympic hopeful. I'd seen film of some of his fights. He was great. So I say yeah no problem. So I get my gear out, and my friend is like, "hey so what's going on now"? And I'm like, "you're about to watch me get my a s s handed to me by a teenager" lol. We sparred 3 or 4 rounds, he clearly outclassed me, as he should have. Maybe I landed a handful of clean shots on him, if that, his defense was so good. My friend held my water in the corner for me, I swear he had such a grin on his face at the end of round when I came back to the corner. He thought he was just in for a day of watching me hit the heavybag and do mitt work. watching me get tagged by a 17 year old, that was a pleasant surprise lol. There's something very humbling about being 21 years old and getting your a s s handed to you by a junior in highschool. Some years ago, Wade fought GGG for the middleweight championship. GGG KOd him in two rounds. My buddy texts me and goes, "We all know GGG doesn't get that early KO without your help softening Wade up all those years ago with the beatdown you gave him sparring..." 10 years afterwards, and still busting my chops, lol. #Post#: 265604-------------------------------------------------- Re: Tank Davis By: HollowHustla Date: July 23, 2022, 2:49 am --------------------------------------------------------- That’s funny…😂😂😂. Real rap…I’d have been laughing too if I was there…😂😂😂 I grew up w boxing. My younger brother dabbled in it, but my foster brother was pretty good. He held the cruiser weight title for a minute in his prime. He wasn’t a knockout artist per se, a lot of early career TKOs. His style was more brawler. I hated watching his fights cuz they were sooooo boring. The first time my mom seen him fight she complained about him using her “good” towels in the corner…😂😂😂. He lost his first title fight vs Al Cole (a good friend from my Army days and the All Army Sports program), then won the belt vs Orlin Norris. He had an ok run, and did well for himself in the sport. Got to fight Tommy Hearns. It was a lost, but still…it was Tommy Hearns. Cruiser weights get no love. It’s a weird weight class IMO …not heavy or light heavy. Even though he was a world champ, he had no fame. He was more local and basically only known in the boxing community. His name is Nate “Mister” Miller…Google him While in the Army sports program I met and became friends w a few Olympians like Kennedy McKinney, Andrew Maynard, and Ray Mercer. Good times at Ft Hood… ***************************************************** (DIR) Next Page
