Lionel 202 Motor Bearing Plate Fix

Hello Folks, this is my first post...it's great to be here!
I'm a long time model railroad enthusiast but I was just
recently grandfathered into Lionel O-gauge through inheritance
       of my brother-in-law's gear.
It's been a couple of weeks now, and I think I'm hooked!
Anyway, I have a postwar 202 diesel locomotive. Runs great one
direction, barely moves in the other. I confirmed it has the
famed motor bearing plate shift. I read the Lionel service
bulletin which advises to stake the case on either side to
remove the slack. Before I proceed are there any other
       alternative/better fixes?
I don't mind staking the case but I thought I'd check first.
       Thanks in advance!
       Cheers, Ken
