       Inherited a Lionel train set.

Hello, my name is John. I have inherited a train set with a lot
of pieces. Let’s just say I know nothing about model train sets.
As a reference, I would need to learn how to put it together
properly down to the track layout. Based on that I need help
figuring out what I have. Not looking to sell as it was supposed
to be given to me by my grandpa and for the better part of my
life I thought it had been stolen. I recently found out that it
has been stored in a basement corner untouched for 40 years or
so. There are a lot of parts and pieces. From what I have seen
the engines and cars appear to be in decent condition. There are
a lot of “plastic-ville” houses that became a home for mice at
some point and I am still trying to organize them to see if I
have any that are not chewed or disgusting. They were in a
separate box from the metal trains and track. It looks like they
were oiled before packed. But again I just don’t know enough to
give any solid answers. I know he pieced it together over many
years and I have had it for a day.
If there is anyone out there willing to spend some time with me
to help get this organized and figure out what I need to get it
working properly I would be very grateful.
       Thank you

Welcome to the forum, and congratulations on your recent
       acquisition!
To help you we need a few things from you:
First a list of all the numbers you find on your rolling stock
       and accessories.
Secondly, some nice pictures of the rolling stock, track and
       accessories.
If they are Lionel, then they are '0' gauge.
To start, clean everything including the wheels, roller pickups
on the locos, and the track with a rag dipped in Naphtha.
Get a set of Labelle train lubricants and lightly oil all axle
bearings and lightly grease all gears.

Chances are the cord on any transformer you may have is in need
       of replacement.
These are just the basics to get your trains up and running. Any
pictures you post may help identify any other parts or work that
       may be needed.
Let us know how you are doing, and ask questions if needed.
       Larry
