Hello cousins!
It seems so many of us are Nurses. I've just received my first
covid Vax, the Pfizer vaccine. And also studying my immunisation
course currently. Hoping to help protect mob, and also get into
more Aboriginal health focused sectors in the future.
Our cousin Chloe runs a certificate II in Aboroginal culture
through Maitland TAFE. It sounds very interesting!
Anyone else heard of relevant courses out there?
Stay safe you mob x

While on the subject of vaccines for Covid-19, most of us will
get the AstraZeneca version...
The recent kerfuffle in Europe about blood clotting has had me
watching things very closely and getting worried that we were
getting spin instead of reality about this potential problem.
For the most part, the answer which came from the investigating
team was a repeat of, "It's safe, we can't find a problem, there
don't seem to be any links to blood clotting."
However, they added a rider, "There does appear to be a
connection with a very small number of examples of vaccinated
people getting a very rare type of clotting and we're looking
further into this."
Then, on another forum, I found some real comfort regarding
this. You can read it here:
(HTM) https://www.dw.com/en/astrazeneca-german-team-discovers-thrombosis-trigger/a-56925550
The keys to it all are in the first couple of paragraphs. First,
they identify that the 'rare clotting' is in the brain. Second,
that they have a treatment for the problem. Third, that
treatment is readily available, presumably world-wide.
This has been pretty much a game-changer for me. Normally I am
very optimistic about things, but when talk about clotting and
(even though it's only a very small percentage of cases) the
potential of it putting one on blood thinners for the rest of
your life, or preventing air travel because of deep-vein
thrombosis or similar, came about I was concerned.
This has returned me to the optimistic column, given that I will
ensure that my doctor is aware of the symptoms of and the
treatment for the brain clotting before I get my vaccine.
If you don't want to go to the link, here's the crux of it:
Researchers at the Greifswald teaching hospital in
northern Germany said on Friday that they had discovered the
cause of the unusual blood clotting found in some recipients of
the AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine, public broadcaster
Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR) reported.
The investigation showed how the vaccine caused rare thrombosis
in the brain in a small number of patients.
The discovery means that targeted treatment can be offered to
those who suffer similar clotting, using a very common
medication.
The success was a result of cooperation between the Greifswald
hospital, state health regulator the Paul Ehrlich Institute
(PEI), as well as doctors in Austria — a nurse there died from
thrombosis in the brain after being vaccinated with the
AstraZeneca jab.
The researchers emphasized that treatment would only be possible
in patients where blood clots appear, rather than as a
preventative treatment.
The information has been shared with hospitals around
Europe.
Further information gives the understanding that the brain blood
clotting is probably confined to women under 55...
This comes about because the UK started with vaccinating the
elderly and were using the Pfizer vaccine as well. In Europe
they looked at the lack of testing of the AstraZeneca vaccine on
elderly and decided to use it only on under-65s.
This has meant that the demographic groups vaccinated with this
product were greatly different and therefore the clotting
results were different.
