I'm not for the death penalty in too many cases and certainly not when a teenager is being convicted. To me, life in prison, even if a possibility for parole after 4 decades, is a just punishment for a person this young. Thoughts? #Post#: 1468-------------------------------------------------- Re: Texas School Shooter Will Not Face Death Penalty, Will Be El igible for Parole By: Murdocs_Mistress Date: May 20, 2018, 10:51 am --------------------------------------------------------- This is one of those damned if you do and damned if you don't situations. While I do believe by 17, one clearly understands what they're doing and whether or not it's wrong, I also don't think minors should be treated as adults when crimes are committed. It's already known that full cognitive development doesn't stop until well into your mid-20's and this includes decision making skills and reasoning abilities. #Post#: 1713-------------------------------------------------- Re: Texas School Shooter Will Not Face Death Penalty, Will Be El igible for Parole By: JaniceLitman Date: May 20, 2018, 3:31 pm --------------------------------------------------------- I posted this on the reddit group. The thing that worries me personally is that I’m about 30 minutes from that school. I don’t want that kid walking around town with my friends and family. He seems like a loose cannon On the other hand, like the previous person said I don’t think at 17 he truly comprehends what he did. I don’t think any 17 year old does. Doesn’t mean he should walk away scot free but we do have to look at this from all angles. #Post#: 1739-------------------------------------------------- Re: Texas School Shooter Will Not Face Death Penalty, Will Be El igible for Parole By: handy0318 Date: May 20, 2018, 3:49 pm --------------------------------------------------------- I don't think he'll be walking around anytime soon. I'm sure with all they have on him, he'll be away for a long time. It's hard to know exactly what is best for these troubled kids who do this. Him being in prison...and all that is going to entail for a young guy...for the next 40 years doesn't seem like it will lead to any kind of rehabilitation. But, as you say, he can't be let off scot free. We need to get a much better handle on why so many of these kids are doing this, so we can perhaps stop them before it's too late. We really need to get a better handle on bullying. Back when I was In school in the 80s and 90s bullying was bad but we didn’t have social media and text messaging and everyone with phones. Things have gotten tougher for kids who are bullied. We need to fix that. We also need better mental health help #Post#: 3806-------------------------------------------------- Re: Texas School Shooter Will Not Face Death Penalty, Will Be El igible for Parole By: CrystalSapphire Date: May 23, 2018, 5:07 pm --------------------------------------------------------- From what I read about this shooting, the shooter was angry for being publicly rejected by a girl he had been heavily pursuing for 4 months. She finally told him off in front of the class. She was an art student (that's why he targeted the art classes) and his first victim. Something needs to be done by all this entitlement. Prison is going to be very hard for him. #Post#: 3835-------------------------------------------------- Re: Texas School Shooter Will Not Face Death Penalty, Will Be El igible for Parole By: cellomom26 Date: May 23, 2018, 6:29 pm --------------------------------------------------------- Life in prison is justified. 17 year old knew exactly what he was doing. Stop coddling criminals and protect innocent citizens. #Post#: 4017-------------------------------------------------- Re: Texas School Shooter Will Not Face Death Penalty, Will Be El igible for Parole By: shnuppyTups Date: May 24, 2018, 5:25 am --------------------------------------------------------- I am not at all sure that this is purely about bullying. It will be a long time (usually) before more information comes out about what was really going on with this kid. I don't think this kid will ever get out of jail. I think any parole will be denied. There would be a huge public outcry, and a very unpopular (elected) judge otherwise. Usually, when we see news reports that some 'heinous' criminal was 'released too soon,' it isn't the whole story. Quite often, the person was only charged with far lesser charges and the length of the sentence was within sentencing guidelines. Judges have to follow the sentencing guidelines. They don't get to choose. Even within the range of the sentencing guidelines (like 7-12 years, say) there are factors of the crime they have to take into account; they have to follow a standardized plan for determining the length of sentence.
