'Take Me Girl, I'm Ready' is NS? I'm never ever going to
understand what is and what isn't.

I can't imagine that it got many spins in the Top venues back in
'71/2/3 John ... way too slow and not in any way "rare" ... but
nowadays on YT etc. the term "Northern Soul" seems to apply to
virtually every '60s or '70s "Soul" track ... I think that the
       term to use is "clickbait".

The current trouble with the term Northern Soul is how it is
used and how it can lead former stars into thinking they are
'King' of Northern Soul or 'Queen' of Northern Soul. I've tried
to explain the situation to the few singers who I've been lucky
enough to meet or speak to that having a Northern Soul favourite
record in your repetoire does not make you a darling of the
Northern Soul scene - its simply means one of your records is a
Northenr favourite and they could care less about the rest of
       your songs.
It is very hard for them to take in, that if they do a show at
the ****** Regent in the south of England that the audience
wont always be chock full of northern soulies and that they
should concentrate their act on their hardcore fans and not
worry about uspetting the 'zillions' of northeners (that they
believe inhabit the UK) by what they sing.
It just seems that when they do specific Northern shows they get
the mistaken idea that every soul or Motown fan is a Northern
Soul fan and obvs it's not the case.

Interesting comment Paul, and I must admit that I have been
known to cringe when visiting US artists have felt compelled to
mention "Northern Soul" when playing at events/venues that are
       anything but "Northern Soul"!!
In contrast I saw Bettye LaVette perform in London about three
times in the 2005/10 period and she very much stuck to her
preferred bluesy/ballad material. My understanding is that when
she appeared at "Northern Soul" venues "Up North" she would
follow the advice of the promoters and put on a very different
show and include more upbeat '60s material like "Only Your Love
Can Save Me" and "I'm Just A Fool For You", songs that I never
heard her sing in London. If that is true then at least one
"Soul" singer understood what was going on.
