       Tamla Motown Chartbusters
By: Silly Wasnt I Date: February 10, 2020, 7:44 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
True confession - I never owned a copy of any of the Tamla
       Motown Chartbusters albums.
I am curious - I know a song by Lynda Carter was included on one
album, even though it had not been a chart hit. Were there other
       inclusions like that?
Also, there must have been chart hits that did not make it to a
       Chartbusters album. What were they?

Oh Eric, go and stand on the naughty step! ;D
I know that there were lots of hits excluded, these are a few.
The time lines also sometimes got muddled.

I went through all the "Chartbusters" tracks a few years back to
see their UK chart positions and may even have posted the
results on MT but I'm sure I had the first "non-chart" single as
"Morning Glow". Seems I was wrong as The Tempts "It's Summer"
(which came a few years earlier) also didn't chart!!
Another track that didn't chart in The UK was The J5's "Dancing
Machine", so that can be added to John's list.
These are the ones that did get included … see if you can spot
the release that was included twice ...

UK Chart entries from 1967 onwards (when the series started) up
to 1971 that never got included would also have to include "Here
Comes The Judge", "Twenty Five Miles", "Some Things You Never
Get Used To", "I Don't Know Why I Love You", "Put Yourself In My
Place" (both The Isleys and The Elgins versions!!), "Just A
Little Misunderstanding", "I Miss You Baby", "You Ain't Living
Until You're Loving" and "Nowhere To Run", though most of those
got onto the "16 Big Hits" collections that seemed to run as a
       parallel series in 1969/70.
I'm sure there are a few more that have slipped my mind.

'Dancing Machine' got to #53. ' Some Things You Never Get Used
To' is on Vol 2. Edwin's 'Stop The War Now' is also missing as
is 'Yesterday's Dreams'. I included the link to the series in my
post. I did spot the 2 x hit :) I think that desperation was
kicking hence the re-released 'Baby Love'!

I'd be interested to know where you obtained that chart position
of #53 for "Dancing Machine" John. My edition of "The Guinness
Book Of British Singles" only includes positions up to #50 until
1978, when the chart they used (Record Retailer/Music Week) went
to a Top 75. The entry for the single at 45Cat has a comment
that the disc was listed at #3 on the "breakers list" for a
while … maybe some publication has used that to deduce a chart
position? Either way, the archives at The Official Chart
Company website also only go up to #50 at the time "Dancing
       Machine" was released.
This is The UK release of "Dancing Machine" at 45Cat.
 (HTM) https://www.45cat.com/record/tmg904

Of course the entire subject of chart positions can be a
minefield. The NME famously had both "I Want You Back" and
"Yesteryou, Yesterme, Yesterday" at #1 in the winter of 1969/70
whereas the chart The BBC used had both stalling at #2. Then
there are various Radio Station, Regional and/or Music-Genre
charts to muddy the waters so just about anything can be
regarded as a "Chartbuster" is the definition is loose enough.
Incidentally "My Mistake" was issued as a UK single on TMG 920
in October 1974, some 9 months after its US release. :)

Thanks for the corrections. I got 'DM' chart position from
Wikipedia which I'll correct. I'm surprised that 'Mistake' was
not a hit but I suppose Motown left it too late!

Well, if Edwin's Stop Her On Sight could be included, what about
       Headline News?
It seems all these lazy re-issues of the Chartbusters series on
CD could have been spiced up by the inclusion of another CD of
       "real" chartbusters!
Someone seems to be pushing hard for Jermaine Jackson, it seems
       to me.
       Fascinating stuff.

       Three more "omissions" …
"A Place In The Sun" - Stevie Wonder
"Good Loving Ain't Easy To Come By" - MG&TT
"Why Must We Fall In Love" - DRATS/Temptations
There are also no Stevie Wonder tracks after "Living For The
City", which I think was due to some clause in Mr Wonder's
contract that meant he would have to explicitly clear any of his
newer recordings for inclusion in such compilations, so no
"Misstra Know It All", "I Wish", "Sir Duke", "Boogie On Reggae
       Woman" etc. etc. etc.
SWI is right that "Headline News" could have been included as
well as "Stop Her On Sight" as that 1968 reissue was technically
a "Double "A" Side", though from what I recall it was "S.O.S"
       that got the airplay.
