       Carette 105/5 "Lokomobile" (Overtype)

       Not quite sure if I have shown this engine her before.
       Bought it a year ago (paid too much...). Only to find that it
       was not just used and sooty, but had suffered a severe burning
       and repainting and scratching and other forms of mistreatment...
       [attachimg=1]
       [attachimg=2]
       [attachimg=3]
       ...and that the cylinder end cap had come off:
       [attachimg=4]
       I decided, in a fit of mild craziness, to a) get her running
       again, b) retain as much of the old substance as possible. Took
       me some weeks, this is what she looks now like:
       [attachimg=5]
       [attachimg=6]
       [attachimg=7]
       Looks a bit blotchy, but I am astonished about how much of the
       old blueing is still there. Sadly missing a chimney, water gauge
       cover and the "door" for the fire box (a shield cum handle
       attached to the original burner, which I am desoldering at the
       moment)
       Here the first test run - mind, the steam pipe has not been
       re-soldered yet:

       And her with the governor in place:

       Tank you for your attention

       Hey Thomas,
       That didn't turn out too bad. I have the same one here and it's
       missing a few original things.
       The stack, front boiler support leg, and the burner are not
       factory issued. Like most of them
       out there mine is missing the catwalk supports, your lucky
       there, you have yours. One other
       thing I noticed different was the boiler endcap and the
       positioning of the site glass holes.
       Yours run straight up and down where mine run on a 45 degree
       angle that puts the drain cock
       in the bottom center. Now I wonder if someone took the endcap
       off and moved it on mine.
       They're good running engines.
       Thanks for showing it.

       Thomas - it looks much better than before and I hope you will
       find
       the chimney. The other missing parts are not so important - on
       the other
       hand the small lever must still be mounted. Still worth the
       efforts
       to save a mistreated steam engine...
       Greetings over the lake, Arnold :D

       The difference speaks for itself, Thomas.
       You have performed a super nice restoration.
       Very well done..!!

       Tommy, I have seen quite a few Carette engines which have the
       angled sight-glass layout. Perhaps a matter of the size (boiler
       diameter) they came in?
       The boiler support pillar is partly melted away in the burning
       the engine must have suffered.
       I still would like to get a fitting chimney...
       Enjoy the steam videos now posted!

       Thank you all for your kind comments. I am quite pleased with
       the result myself.
       I have just posted videos of the first steam test in the video
       section!
       Thank you

       Hey Thomas, I'm going to throw a couple pics in here for you,
       hope you don't mind.
       First pic is the front pillar, not as nice as your original one.
       Found a stack on
       German eBay that someone is making and was close, kind of. It's
       a little lose fitting
       so I folded some black heavy paper for both sides to shim it,
       works great. The last
       two pics show the site glass angle and the replacement
       burner,(not original) that it
       came with. Hope the stack thing helps you out where your at.

       Hi Tommy,
       thanks for the interesting pictures!
       The chimney looks good on this engines - the "crown" with the
       long vents is more of the Doll type (I believe the Carette ones
       had small round vents), but it definitely looks much better with
       such a fitting (that is: straight) chimney than without one...
       The front support serves its function - the (original) one on my
       engine is half eaten away by the fire... Perhaps it was not
       Carette's best idea to pint the burner vent directly at these
       supports.
       Regarding the end cap: a) so nice to see it with the water gauge
       cover! b) I do agree: it looks as if sb has rotated the whole
       end cap... But perhaps sb else has another photo for comparison.
       All the best
       Thomas
