A Horse of a Different Color
By: IndianaRog Date: August 31, 2023, 11:16 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
I have been wanting an early Jensen horseshoe magnet generator
ever since I sold off a Jensen 50 which included one (typical
seller's regret!). The horseshoe type are just cool looking in
my eyes, kinda rare (last one sold for $500 recently on eBay)
and they generate a bit more power than either a cast iron based
15 (with 3 part magnet which replaced the horseshoe type) or the
newest aluminum based Jensen 15 with 3 part magnet which
       replaced all cast versions.
Well, I recently acquired a later cast base 15 with 3 part
magnet AND an earlier Jensen 10 (which used a blue horseshoe
magnet typical of the forties). With the help of steam friend
Bruce of St. Paul Steam, we switched the magnets and armatures,
keeping original shafts with their respective cast base. Bruce
added two brass oilers for good measure :)...I'm a sucker for a
       little bling!
Result was a correct Horseshoe magnet Jensen 15 shown below (I
painted the magnet red as they were in 1950 just because I like
red!). I then swapped it into the layout of a vintage 25/25
creation I had gotten from Bruce a few months ago (which had
used a later cast 15)....making that setup now even more
"vintage" and letting me see the horseshoe generator operate
regularly vs. being a shelf queen. I will be selling off the
Jensen 10 once I refinish it as I don't need it.
So here it is...I will make a video later, but a few stills for
       now.

Geez Rog ,that looks "Great" ! That new horse shoe genny looks
more at home on your 25/25 than The other genny, & the oilers
fit right in with its plinth mates. The red magnet accents the
red on the handles as well. 😊
I never realized (before now) that the horse shoe generators had
an armature 20% larger than the more modern 3 piece magnet
assembly that Jensen went with later following the phase out of
       the horse shoe genny.

She's a real beauty, and I'd certainly not hesitate to get a
stand alone, just to have as a Shelf Queen!
Fortunately, I do have a few "G" suffixed Jensens that have this
       vintage #15 on board!!!

Thanks for the kind words guys. If I could find TWO more
horseshoe magnet generators, I would swap them into my Jensen 51
replica, but they are just too hard to find...will stick with
       what I have.
Bruce, your comment about the horseshoe magnet's red color going
well with the red handles (five) on the vintage 25/25 plant. I
might just touch up those handles with the same red I painted
the magnet with to enhance them a bit! I can never leave well
       enough alone.

RE: "I just can't leave well enough alone"
I expect no less from you my friend 😄
We can all tinker with these plants no end if something else
didn't come along and steal our attention away.

       Rog:
I missed this one when you originally posted it.
       You are an admirable craftsman.
Thank you for sharing the pictures.
Your SPS Jensen Plant looks great.
