       Gary O'Neill
By: Acme Thunderer Date: June 19, 2023, 8:02 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
The 'silly season' has obviously started early with the sacking
of AFC Bournemouth's manager Gary O'Neill just seven months
after he was appointed permanent manager and kept them in the PL
at a canter. Views? bmb? Aho who next to grace the palm-filled
boulevards of the South coast town? Big Sam?

7 months too late I think you will find is the overwhelming view
of AFCB fans. Appointed as the cheap option while the take over
rumbled on and on and on, excellent coach but not a PL manager.
We stayed up in spite of him rather than due to him. Less than
1% of fans wanted him appointed in the first place and that
maybe generous. Showed a complete lack of ambition as far as we
were concerned. If you look around on social media, fans of
every other club are saying it's a disgraceful decision and we
deserve relegation for it, our fans are saying yeah thanks bye
bye! The football was dire under him, he had no plan B - fans
wanted him gone long ago. Nice guy, excellent coach & I really
hope he goes on to shine elsewhere but I can't say I'm not
relieved by the news. Andoni Iraola named as the new gaffer - 2
       year deal.

As an outsider, I was not convinced that he had the necessary
qualities and personality to run an ambitious Premiership club.
I make no comment about Bournemouth's ambitions! What I find sad
is that another foreign manager has been appointed (and I cannot
say either way I am impressed by his qualities) and do wonder
how a British manager will ever get a manager's job especially
from BAME group - or indeed other groups just in case I am
       accused of being sexist!
Wolves performance this year lacked ambition and lacked
entertainment but that was out of necessity and in their case
and Bournemouth's, it worked. Bit hard to judge O'Neill on his
lack of ambition for the side or the quality of performances but
those in the know on the south coast may, after careful
reflection, understand why the change was felt to be necessary.
Just my opinion on a day when I have little else to do!

Andoni Iraola - no PL experience but has been ace by many
accounts in La Liga so we'll wait and see.
I think you are right in relation to GON in the "I was not
convinced that he had the necessary qualities and personality to
run an ambitious Premiership club." Often referred to as a PE
teacher, which I think very disrespectful - he has great
coaching ability but not what was needed for a PL manager. It's
hard enough to motivate a squad when you're rattling around at
the bottom of the table and that takes a huge personality. He
was rather too nice in many ways. I really do hope he goes on to
shine somewhere, I have nothing against him at all, he's just
not the right person to take us forward, imo.
Belisa was first choice for the job but couldn't agree personal
terms - GON then got appointed. None of it was helped by the
length of time the take over took. Max was right to sack Parker
on the spot, he was always a very patient and supportive owner
(Thank you Max) so to slag him off in the press was
unforgivable. The problem was is that is when the takeover talks
started to really gather pace & become a reality. Max wouldn't
appoint a new permanent manager because he was selling up, the
owners in waiting couldn't appoint a new manager as they didn't
have the authority to so it was a bit grim really. It had a huge
negative affect right across the club. It's only people outside
of Bournemouth that seem surprised by the news. Players did what
they had to stay up to get new contracts or move on, that was
apparent to anyone who watched us more that twice across the
       season. It was not pretty!
Completely agree with you on the lack of opportunities for
English coaches though, particularly those from the BAME
community. No-one seems willing to give them a chance. Eddie
Howe being an exception in terms of young English coaches.
I find a sort of comparable thing in players as well to be
honest - we seem to spend a lot of time developing other nations
promising youngsters in the PL and less English youngsters. I'm
all for a cap on the number of foreign players myself. Doesn't
affect my nations - Northern Irish and Hungarian players rarely
       come from the top flight!

Thank you for these most informative posts. Point taken on Gary
O'Neill and I wish him well for the future. The 'silly season'
continues though with the departure of Darren Moore from
newly-promoted Sheffield Wednesday 'by mutual consent. I wonder
       what that's all about!?

Moore to West Brom, current manger to Leeds. Maybe.

Don't think so, if Moore was going to another club Wednesday
would have wanted compensation, not let him leave by mutual
consent. Reading between the lines I think Moore has set out
what players he needs to stay in the Championship, Chansiri has
told him he is getting next to nothing, so they have agreed to
       go their separate ways.
Also Carlos Carvalhal, who Chansiri loves, has recently left his
job so I'd say it is nailed on he will be returning as manager.

Give it a couple of years and Eddie Howe will be back at
Bournemouth once Newcastle have completed their transformation
       from the media's plucky-underdog-who-made-the-top-4 into
       financially-backed-massive-club-that-doesn't-win-everything , at
which point they will dispense with Howe and go down the big
name foreign coach route and appoint a Benitez/Conte/Mourinho
type to "take them to the next level" or some such nonsense!

My earlier comments have come back to haunt me. I am a Wolves
       supporter.
BMB's comments are worrying but in truth Wolves were poor
entertainment too, struggling to avoid the drop. Fair play
rules, poor management and dubious player acquisitions in the
past have not helped here but O'Neill's record is better than
       his predecessor at Wolves.
More of the same I fear hampered by the recent past and fans who
are not too happy and who will be quick to pull the trigger if
       the slightest thing goes wrong.

Perhaps the biggest positive is that he has a point to prove. I
hope he succeeds - maybe he has learned from his time at AFCB &
will put that to good use. As I said up there somewhere, he's a
really good coach, no doubting his abilities in that respect,
it's his team management I think he needs to work on. Wish him
all the best to be honest.

I am not complaining at all about my country left back signing
for my club! Have my #3 Kerkez shirt all ready for the season!
Was the first one bought & the Hungary flag flying was
noticeable at the pre-season home games - giving away where I
       sit!
