       Gareth Southgate

So Gareth has, perhaps unsurprisingly, decided to vacate the
England job after 8 years. He has had many detractors over the
years, but the facts speak for themselves, 3 semis and 2 finals
since 2018, and we should be grateful to Gareth for that, as
well as putting England back on the football map. I wish Gareth
all the best for the future, whatever that holds, and thanks for
the memories if not the behind-the-sofa moments in recent times.
Who next? Howe, Potter, Klopp, Pep? It will be interesting to
see which direction the FA take next.

We thank Gareth for his tireless work over the last eight years,
however he should have resigned after the last world cup finals
       in my opinion.
Gareth has been a very lucky manager in terms of opposition we
have played in major tournaments in his time and really we
       should have done better.
When we came up against good teams we always failed, ie when we
had three good teams in our Nations League group we got
       relegated.
I fear Gareth is ydays man with ydays tactics who didnt have the
courage to leave certain players out and think he has taken us
as far as he can. We have become a team of individual moments
       rather than an impressive team.
Good luck for the future Gareth and thankyou for all the hard
       work you have put in.

As opposed to that England team of perennial winners and
       finalists before him??

I listened to multiple ex-pros on talkSPORT today, including
Stan Collymore, Emile Heskey and John Barnes, who all said
pretty much the same thing. In that we might be looking back 10
years from now saying that Gareth Southgate was the most
successful manager England have ever had in terms of competition
       progression.
I do think it was time for Southgate to move on, but it is a
risk. People forget that before he joined we were getting
knocked out in group stages, last 16s, quarter finals, or even
not qualifying at all. And I'm not buying the "we have the best
team in Europe" argument, as very few of the current team would
get into the team with the squad we had in 2008. Who of our
current back 4 are getting in ahead of Neville, Cole, Terry and
Ferdinand? Then add in Gerrard, Lampard, Rooney, Owen, etc. We
have a very promising young squad, but expectations were way too
       high for this tournament.

The problem we had in 2008 and still have is we have good
players but they struggle when not playing in their club team
pattern with their teams foreign players plus trying to fit
square pegs in round holes. Lampard and Gerrard were never as
good playing together or for their country. If you have three
world class players in one position it doesnt always mean they
are world class players when asked to play in a different
position, so be brave and leave two out.

Arguably a similar problem this year, with two number 10s in
Bellingham and Foden. Plus add into that the fact that Kane
also drops into that position and it gets worse.
The best managers pick players to fit a formation, not a
formation to fit players, and that is one of the areas Southgate
struggled in. Foden is a world class player, but he isn't a
left winger which is where he spent most of his time.
Bellingham is also a world class player, but he isn't a left
midfielder as her was asked to play in the 4-4-1-1 used in most
of the final. A stronger manager wouldn't have done that and
would have left one of them out, just as a stronger manager back
in 20018 would have left one of Gerrard and Lampard out.

Is there not also an argument that truly world class players can
       adapt to different positions?
Obviously I’m not saying defenders should be attackers but
       across the attacking positions.

I would add to that that a few players looked to be carrying
injuries and as similar in previous tournaments a stronger
manager would have left them out. Gareth has his qualities but i
feel he is very much a yes man and ultra cautious with his
       selections and undroppables.
