       Countering Lag
By: AceAv Date: January 16, 2013, 6:51 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
For new members that have experienced lag issues please read:
       Hey guys,
Been hitting up some great games across the ditch with Forsyth
and C-America. We both have good ADSL2 connections, but the
standard ping (time it takes for data to be sent) is usually
100-150 between AUS & NZ connections.
Looking into this further RLL2 is not designed to have antilag
filters etc. The main problems that occur in games with 100+
       ping are:
-Defenders don't react in time to make tackles
-Needing to press 'X' or 'O' half sec before the tackles, or you
will usually just run past them..
-Not being able to counter offloads due to dumb AI committing to
a tackle and the other defenders in the line being drawn in.
When you vs good players, this is the main cause for so many
line breaks, which cause your defense to be constantly running
back onside, which causes them to fatigue massively (many of you
have noticed their bars go right down even with only 10-15 mins
       of in-game time).
So I have 2 proposals that I would like you all to trial when we
       experience games with higher pings.
-Both players will need to agree to implement one of these in
the game when lag is a factor:
       1) 'Hard Mode': 1st tackle to 3d tackle you can pass a maximum
of twice on offense -and you can chip/grubber anytime. But then
on the 4th to 5th it's no holds bars til turnover. -This really
turns it more into a footy game where: fends, shoulder charges
and decisive dummy half plays make the difference! -rather than
it being a pass-a-thon to exploit slow reacting defenders from
       the 1st tackle!
       2) 'Safe Mode' - Interchanges 12, Difficulty "Professional or
Veteran": The main problem this counters is the speed of the
play the ball. Legend mode is a little more realistic with how
the tackling works and how long u can hold players down for.
But Prof or Vet difficulty gives you that extra 2-3 seconds
needed to reset your line, pick the right defender and also give
the boys a break so fatigue doesn't contribute. -They are going
to get naturally fatigued anyway and players like your wingers
or other backs who would be wasted numbers as interchanges, can
be given a spell with the 12 interchange rule -to freshen their
       reaction time.
Please go ahead and try one of these options if lag is an issue
in game. Ragequitting because your 48-0 down still isn't
tolerated. Please refer to the rules in regards to etiquette
       with quitting games:

Who has had big lag problems?
In this comp I have only played the one game where lag was a
huge issue rd1 vs raiders. The shoreline reflected this 76-58 or
       something silly. We couldn't tackle.

Yeh I couldn't connect with ramrod at all the other day before
you played him Captain. There was a massive delay. Then the next
day same thing. But then he went offline in the afternoon when
he realised he had a problem and said he was going to sort it
out. When he came back on that night we got a perfect
connection. I don't know what he did.

Signs the I look for in a laggy game is the delay between the
kick off and the sound of the ball getting kicked. Sometimes it
might sort itself out. Another thing is the scrubs. If there is
lag you see the players run in fastworward motions. When moving
the kicking tee for a conversion, you notice the lag/delay in
moving it. The worst games are when you can't tackle. Every game
vs a UK opponent is when I experience this. It's worse while
defending. But when you have the ball the delay shifts to the
other player. So when you have the ball you will score 42 points
until you make a mistake, then the game will shift.
My games are 90% okay. There might be the odd delay spike that
could result in a try being scored. My area will have the NBN
completed some time this year. We are one of the first areas in
SA to have the NBN. Hopefully it won't cost an arm and a leg.

No, I have adsl2. We are having the inforstriucture for the
National Broardband Network installed. It is the next generation
of high speed Internet. Hopefully I will be able to play the
Poms in a delay free game
