The Corsa Combo project: worlds slowest!!! (AKA the VANCAR proje
       ct)
By: Villager Date: September 1, 2013, 4:09 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
well, its not mog related, but it is my pride and joy (along
side the westfalia ;) ) so thought id make a thread on it.
I got the good old faithfull combo about 18 months ago, after i
got fed up of my caddy breaking down on me >:( :-\ (i ended up
stranded on the side of the m62 in the middle of winter on the
way back from an install, taking water from a little stream full
of stagnant water with a cup and putting it in the water bottle.
then giving up on that prospect i thrashed it to ferry bridge
services, about 1 mile, and waited for dad to rescue me, not
giving a dam whether it seized up on me or not, shortly after
that it got turned into baked bean cans) as soon as i got in it
i was very impressed, it is light and easy to drive, and also a
lot more comfortable and spacious than the caddy. therefor i
have come up with about 5 different plans for future combos
(including this one) but theyre for the future ;)
so what im going to do first is copy all my progress threads
from vxon (vauxhall owners network, a great forum :)
 (HTM) http://vauxhallownersnetwork.co.uk/index.php?threads/the-corsa-combo-project-worlds-slowest.315690/<br
/>)then i'll update this thread when i do something to the van :
       )
       Hello everyone!
After doing a few things to the van in the months ive had it
(inbetween all the other projects weve got ) i thought
id put some pics up of the things ive been doing. i will warn
you all, this is going to be a very slow build :) we have to
many projects to do, so when we have a vehicle thats running we
tend to look at the ones that arent, we hate having stuff that
wont move under its own steam.
so, the first things we did were get the van sign written, after
a lot of of Tcut to get rid of the faded spots from the old sign
writing, (i was like popeye after that :D), it looked like this.
 (HTM) http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l524/dubmad1/PHOT0127.jpg
i drove it around abit afterwards, hense the dirt around the
       front arch.
then i drove the van to the graphics man and spent the day
learning to put the transfers on, i drove the van home looking
       like this 8)
 (HTM) http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l524/dubmad1/P120605_193834.jpg
i also fitted the mud gaurds after finding it was terrible for
spraying mud up the side, we live in the country side so the
cars get dirty easily. its better with them on, but not a lot.

       ---------------------------------------------------------
anyway, i fitted a new horn to the van a couple of weeks ago as
i was thrilled by its origional "meep meep", which was rather
embarrising. so i went for a couple of air horns.
 (HTM) http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l524/dubmad1/P120611_194118.jpg
we have a couple of these on one of our unimogs, we didnt expect
them to last 2 minutes as there ring, but they have so i got
some for the van. there actually made by fiam so thats probably
       why there not to bad.
i had to make a new bracket using a strip of galvonised steel
about 1mm thick, for the pump and relay i used hles that were
already near to the horns well out of the way of any water.
typically i didnt have to use it for a couple of days, neither
in anger or cause i saw anyone ::)

       ---------------------------------------------------------
now to the part ive had the most fun from :)
first of all, i fitted my new tweeters. at first i planned to
fit them in the same clip as the origionals, but they were to
tight. so i modified the covers so they slide on from the front.
first i drilled the clip off the back which is held on by 3
plastic "rivets", then i cut the grill out using a stanley
knife, with a gardian beside me of course ;) .
and tada, it looked a bit like this, but not fitted :D
 (HTM) http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l524/dubmad1/P120709_191047.jpg
the tweeters came with passsive crossovers so i mounted the
crossovers behind what was the tweeter cover, right at the
bottom (black sqaure), useing self tappers.
 (HTM) http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l524/dubmad1/marker.jpg
and with it all back together it looks like this, im pretty
       chuffed.

       ---------------------------------------------------------
Next i fitted the door speakers, 16.5s three way 4 ohms, i used
the same method here, therfore removing the need for adpaters
and also giving it some bass.
i removed the door card and cut out the fins, leaving the lip so
       that it was still strong.
i did have a picture with the grill cut out, but i cant find it
       >:( so i'll have to use a before pic.
 (HTM) http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l524/dubmad1/P120628_180932.jpg
you can actually see the cut out from the other door card to the
       left.
i mounted the speaker using socket heads and nylocks, then the
       grill using self tappers.
 (HTM) http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l524/dubmad1/P120627_210547.jpg
i expected to have to strenghen the pannel some how because of
vibrations but so far i havent had a problem.
again im pretty happy with the way it looks, but im not to sure
on the covers, they look a bit space shipy to me, maybe they'll
       grow on me.
heres a pic of them both together.
 (HTM) http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l524/dubmad1/P120627_210534.jpg
the sound is far better now than the origional system, just the
tweeters made a massive difference, but with 16.5s its like a
       different van :D .

so, next i fitted the amp, completely ignoring kenwood who said
to fit the speakers first, because this is the bit i was looking
forward to, you can fit speakers any day, but this is my first
       amp install :) .
so first off i removed the seat and gave the whole job a good
       clean and hover.
then i made a stencil out of cardboard in the shape of the
floor. i used a jigsaw to cut the wood, 15mm ply, for the amp to
       sit on'
 (HTM) http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l524/dubmad1/P120708_122719-1.jpg
 (HTM) http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l524/dubmad1/P120708_123056-1.jpg
next was to run the ignition live and the live, i removed the
sill trim, part of the b pillar trim and the a pillar trim under
the dash on both sides of the van, but realised afterwards i
only needed to remove the passenger side trims.
first i ran the main live (big red wire), i passed it through
the cubby boxs behind the seats.
 (HTM) http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l524/dubmad1/P120708_183351-1.jpg
then into the flexible wire channel behind the b pillar trim,
 (HTM) http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l524/dubmad1/P120708_154805-1.jpg
after this i ran it along the sill (again through the wire
channel) and up under the dash and into the wire box behind the
       glove box.
 (HTM) http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l524/dubmad1/P120708_154820-1.jpg
 (HTM) http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l524/dubmad1/P120708_163325-1.jpg
its a right pain to remove the lid of this i found out :P youve
got to remove the trim from under the windscreen and then slide
the battery over and undo the lid.
then i ran the wire into the fuse box and back out through the
       gland underneath,
 (HTM) http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l524/dubmad1/P120708_163131-1.jpg
i then mounted the fuse holder, i mounted it on top the wire box
lid, using a small amount of sealant to stop water getting in.
heres a pic of it back together.
 (HTM) http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l524/dubmad1/P120708_174657-1.jpg
ive left the fuse out of it for now until i get the speakers in.
i also plan to get some sheathing to protect the wire from the
       metal edge.
i ran the ignition live the same way and put it to an ignition
live in the fuse box as i couldnt find one at the back of the
radio, again this is currently disconnected until the speakers
       are in..
for the earth i used the threaded hole in the cubby box which i
think is normally used for holding the jack. you can just see
the end of the bolt in this picture just behind the amp.
 (HTM) http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l524/dubmad1/P120708_183351-1.jpg
       with the trim on.
 (HTM) http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l524/dubmad1/P120708_184253-1.jpg
       and the seat in.
 (HTM) http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l524/dubmad1/P120709_133854-1.jpg
i plan to stain the wood black at some point. gonna be a while
until my next update as dads got the van for the next 3 days so
i might just put a pic of the sub up so you get the idea :)
       thoughts, ideas and opinions welcome.
       cheers, Brian

Right, now to take out the bulkhead. should have been a 10
minute job but it turns out the ply floor in the back was
covering a couple of mountings ::) so i had to take that out.
pic of the bulk head in.
 (HTM) http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l524/dubmad1/P120716_142621.jpg
then i took the bulkhead out and the floor, and after a bit of a
clean i revealed a fantastically straight floor :D
 (HTM) http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l524/dubmad1/P120716_151042.jpg
then i put the floor back in, heres a pic with the bulkhead out.
 (HTM) http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l524/dubmad1/P120716_152032.jpg
turns out the bulkhead is to small for the sub, i could make it
fit with some modification but im looking at several different
ways, so im gonna have a think first.
       Cheers, Brian

just thought id tell you all ive got wood!
20 mm mdf for my subwoofer. :D
so, the main targets for this were:
for the box to be removable
for the seats to be able to recline all the way back, cause my
dads tall and has it right back.
for the subwoofer to be clear of the seats (not touching).
for the sub box to act as a bulkhead.
so first thing i did was cut the holes for the speakers, first i
found the centre and made a cross that went right to the edges,
then i used the stencil provided to mark out the hole for the
sub. after this i measured 70 mm out to mark where the 6x9s were
to go, i had to make my own stencil for the 6x9s which was a
       right pain! >:(
heres a pic of the doodles on the board
 (HTM) http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l524/dubmad1/P120810_161059-1.jpg
then i used a jigsaw to cut the holes out, and after a bit of
sanding, and the speakers putting on, it looked like this.
 (HTM) http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l524/dubmad1/P120810_165711-1.jpg
next i made another board to go over this one, so that the sub
was "sunk in", this would stop the seats from hitting it, and
also provide some protection from elbows, theres a pic further
on, unfortunately i didnt get one with it on its own.
then i made the sub box, much like any other sub box really :)
heres some pics, note the board that makes the sub "sunk in"

the rear is going to be removable, so i can remove the 6x9s ;)
next on the list is to line it.
currently saving up for a kenwood head unit
 (HTM) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/KENWOOD-D...?pt=UK_Sound_Vision_Other&hash=item3a6dbbf1fc<br
/>then ill finally be able to wire it all up ::)
i will also be making it so its one short strap on either side
to hold it in, so it looks tidier.
thoughts and opinions welcome as usual

right, got my head unit and trim on tuesday, fitted it that
night, had to go to halfords for the wiring adapter.
       here it is all in,
 (HTM) http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l524/dubmad1/P120910_175530.jpg
then i was finaly able to wire my amp up to my radio:D i used
rca lead and ran them under the gearbox tunnel trim and then
under the carpet to the amp.
then i used 6 core wiwi instead of speaker cable as it looks
tidier, to wire up the sub and 6x9s,
 (HTM) http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l524/dubmad1/P120905_195644.jpg
i plan to get a six pin multi plug next so i can just unplug it
       and remove it ;)
then i struck it all up and listened to some music! not befoe
putting some port holes in for the 6x9s ;)
 (HTM) http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l524/dubmad1/P120910_175606.jpg
pleased to say that i think ive got the balance for everything
just right, can hear the symbols and voices and drums and
everything perfectly :D complete fluke off course :D
next on the list is the 6 pin plug and cloth line it, im also
going to put some heavy curtains in, fixed top and bottom, to
stop the noise coming through, and make it so i can open them to
       put long things in.
thoughts and opinions welcome as usual :)
