I use the VICE emulator to emulate some of the Commodore 8bit family computers on a modern Linux PC connected via HDMI, including the C128. Just tested: The resolution doesn't changes. But looks like a C128. Starting DOSBOX, there the resolution switches to 640x480 (the display reports so).
