So Yes. It does require or at least is streamlined by having keys in your account. That being said you can attach to POP and handle yourself or whatever it is Open Source and hosted outside the 9 Eyes (in Switzerland) so there's that. Also you can require 2 factor or extra passwords for reading or admin functions. It is reasonably secure. If anything, their servers may be more resilient to attack than a personal pc. It is more than a few steps up from Gmail being encrypted and not read by a shady corporation. Then again, for someone who has multiple systems, having access to this without having to have private keys all over the place is convenient.
