The idea behind this service is you have the box in your house which acts as the email server. Since residential IPs often are blocked for email services this box makes a VPN connection to their servers which do all the email connections on their side. They say they can't see any of your email traffic passing through this VPN connection, which I guess could be the case for any TLS encrypted traffic. The local hard drive is encrypted so if someone steals the device they can't access the data on it. You can use your own domain names which is a plus, but there is no webmail which is kind of a deal-breaker for me. There's also a US$99 /year subscription cost.
