My family raised chickens for eggs and then ofcourse the old  
hens would end up as food.

But even if it was just for the eggs, I could not justify  
keeping chickens. The cost of raising them, feeding them,  
providing necessary health care, etc.. simply cost more than  
the few eggs that I would need just for myself and another  
family member.

That was back when a dozen of the cheapest eggs were roughly  
$2CDN per dozen.  My dad sold our fresh eggs at $3/dozen.  We  
had way more than we needed for a family of 4.
