I'm using Home Assistant ("Home Assistant OS", running in a kvm VM)  
and ZigBee for my system. I mostly use it to switch things on/off  
(lights, outlets) using buttons (IKEA ZigBee buttons), but also use  
some automations (eg. turn on the air purifier (Wifi controlled) for  
15mins after the door is closed (ZigBee door contact).

In my opinion, "home automation" is something like the "model  
railroads" of the 80s/90s, it's never finished, not really neccessary  
(because most things also can be controlled manually), but increadibly  
neat if it's working :) (oh, and some parts can get expensive)
