Expensive energy is a huge problem because the availability of energy dictates
the availability of everything else, including food and medicine.

Your typical Western country has grown its population based on the asumption
that a certain level of food and essentials can be provided with the current
technology and availability of energy. More expensive fuel means less food and
less medicine and less wool blankets to face winter.
