 My turntable had a little lever near the base of the tone arm that let
 you lift the needle straight off.

 When my parents moved, they gave me their stereo they'd bought in 1997.
 The Garand turntable was long gone, as was the BSR 8-track tape player,
 but I have a mint (physical) condition Harmon Kardon 330b tuner.
 Apparently people love these things because they were designed to sound
 like a tuner with a tube amp. I'm going to need to replace some caps
 before they go in the near future.
