I was always enamored with those "retro" kitchen appliances - they're a
small toaster oven with a griddle above the toaster and a coffee maker
slapped on the side. Perfect for a dorm room if you're not a huge coffee
drinker.

My son is in his third year of college, and for this generation it's all
about the microwave. I had a 10 cup coffee maker and a toaster oven when
I was in school, and although some foods took longer, being able to make
a quick piece of toast or grilled cheese made it worth it.

Oh, and one of those old cheap tin pots with the immersion heater in it
- great for tea, soups and ramen.
