Have you got M17 running over RF?  I'm able to run it using a MMDVM, M17Client
and a FT-818. :)

Ground conditions have a massive impact on HF antenna performance.  That's
definitely what's making your portable ops better than at home.  And the low
noise floor just makes HF more pleasant to listen to, as a bonus. :)
