It doesn't always work reliable, but I'm not sure why (maybe the message number changes after packing the message base?). In fidonet we use long lines, sometimes longer than 1000 chars. format=flowed is a simple workaround to encode unwrapped long lines in wrapped lines (whitespace before CRLF, like the 2 whitespaces with Markdown).
