Most Pi images are based on Debian, and I think it requires at least a Linux kernel on any image. So, it can run anything that runs in Debian, as long as theres a 'armhf' build. I know from experience that DOSbox works in PiOS. I've learned QEmm also works, but I've been having trouble with it. The main problem I have is that my Pi isn't connected to a screen or input, and doesn't have PiOS installed. I'm using an image called DietPi, which is command line only, and interacting through SSH (mostly). As the name implies, DietPi is about as stripped-down as a Pi image can get. A fresh install is something like 1.5 GB, uses about 300 MB RAM at restart, and has practically zero CPU overhead. Perfect for running a bunch of different projects on a 3B+...The reason I'm running it headless is much simpler. I have only so many keyboards, mice, and monitors, and I don't have a KVM switch. And getting DOS to work is just the FIRST step! XD Meanwhile, Mystic has a linux install, and was working in just a handful of hours. I brought it fully online in less than a week. It did help that I had stumbled upon Avon's tutorial videos. :) McDoob SysOp, PiBBS pibbs.sytes.net --- Mystic BBS v1.12 A46 2020/08/26 (Raspberry Pi/32) * Origin: PiBBS (21:4/135) .
