I just grabbed the grub source on another (slackware) machine here and I ran ./bootstrap and it grabbed gnulib and carried on. I think I ran ./autogen.sh before but I should have let ./bootstap do that. It found a lot of dependecies on that machine and took quite a while to run compared to building in the lfs chroot.
