The new ($12 external USB) modem came today and it appears to be working 
*better* than the internal (GVC PCI): I can at least make a connection from a 
remote system, but the best rate I've been able to achieve was 28800/21600, 
rather than the 33600/33600 that I would expect. Please let me know your 
experiences with the new modem and I'll be keeping an eye on the logs. It might 
be time to bring an old-fashioned USR external modem out of retirement.
