Now that we're talking bloaty IDEs (VS, Eclipse)... let me butt in here to say
that I've always enjoyed using NetBeans for java, ruby, and of course it has
C/C++ support. It's come a long way, and seems a bit more mature than Eclipse,
but to each his own of course.

The "new" free/open source model also helps!
