Then you visit a website that is posting content from an advertisement network
that got compromised, get  a malware-infected piece of advertisement, and then
your machine belongs to some Russian blackhat mafia.

Yet another reason to hate advertisement networks.

There are reasons to stick to old operating systems, but you have to be extra
careful. I have a Win 7 virtual machine which I run behind a filtering proxy in
order to minimize vuln impacts, for example.
