Hard to believe that *anyone* would actually prefer Ctrl-B...  :-)

You probably already know this, but you can "permanently" define your 
desired prefix key in a config file (Linux "dotfile") called .tmux.conf

My very simple config looks like this:

# remap prefix from 'C-b' to 'C-a'
unbind C-b
set-option -g prefix C-a
bind-key C-a send-prefix

# split panes using | and -
bind | split-window -h
bind - split-window -v
unbind '"'
unbind %

# switch panes using Alt-arrow without prefix
bind -n M-Left select-pane -L
bind -n M-Right select-pane -R
bind -n M-Up select-pane -U
bind -n M-Down select-pane -D
