Subj : a year in review To : All From : August Abolins Date : Mon Dec 28 2020 10:05 pm Hello All! As this year wraps up, I thought it would be interesting to recount some of the new developments that took place affecting the Fidonet/BBS hobby. In no particular order.. [1] Thomas Bampi of 2:333/808 (Veleno BBS) introduced a point system completely webbased that does not impose the requirement for the user to use additional sofware beyond a standard web browser. The system provides the reading and writing of messages with GoldED+. [2] Stas Mishchenkov of 2:460/58 (Lame Users Breeding BBS) introduced a Fido by Telegram process that allows the use of the Telegram app to access Fidonet echomail areas. This is primarily to demonstrate the feasibility and convenience of using Telegram on mobile devices (or a desktop) and enjoy true protability and syncing across devices when accessing echomail. [3] Vince Coen of 2:250/1 rebuilt a new version of the ELIST robot. [4] Originally in Decemeber 2019 but considered for this report, Glenn Rossi of 1:275/301 (IPTIA BBS) announced that the entire content of the outgoing fidonet.ozzmosis.com archive was recovered, as well hundreds of thousands of other echomail messages from the Internet Archive and other sources, online at: https://www.ipingthereforeiam.com/bbs/ [5] A Sourceforge project was made available for porting the NTVDM subsystem of 32-bit Windows, over to 64-bit. [6] BBSing took a comedic turn around March with a series of YouTube videos exploring the current state of select BBSes by the personality know as "Cheese Burger" as he visited random BBSes. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVzhw8__cyDQHcQ7dHAFRnQ/ [7] Mystic BBS software was succesfully installed and operational on a smartphone. The full documentation on how it was achieved is found here: https://bit.ly/2UK60jk [8] A new 3-part BBS documentary series was announced. "Back to the BBS" aired its first episode on Dec 20. https://youtu.be/n0OwGSX2IiQ If anyone can think of adding anything else, please do. -- ../|ug --- OpenXP 5.0.48 * Origin: Got mobile?
