I installed SDL, that caused compilation to bom (after doing a "make clean"). 
Next attempt, delete the source tree, and attempt compilation again...

<drum roll>

That compiled.  Liike like "make clean" is not cleaning all object files from
the source tree.

And now SyncTerm works in X. :)
