A person has been taken into custody by Nelson police after a suspicious
house fire in Upper Takaka overnight.

Fire and Emergency spokesperson Ryan Dawson told 1News the house fire,
reported at 3.27am this morning, was "well-ablaze" when crews arrived. Three
fire trucks and a water tanker were initially sent to the scene, before a
further three trucks were sent.

The fire has been extinguished but two support vehicles remained at the scene
this afternoon to monitor hotspots.

Dawson said a fire investigator will be heading back to the house later today
to "determine the cause of the fire".

Police said no one was injured in the blaze.

"Enquiries into the circumstances of the fire are ongoing," a police
spokesperson said.
