Subj : New World shoppers' helping City Missions and food banks ahead of wint To : All From : News Person Date : Mon Apr 08 2024 01:25 pm Many Kiwi families are struggling with the cost of living crisis and are unable to make ends meet, with just putting food on the table being out of reach for many. But as the colder winter months approach, they'll be doing it even tougher if they can't access the warm meals, basic hygiene products and essentials needed to get by. To help combat this and give City Missions and local food banks a much-needed boost of vital supplies, New World has brought back its Family2Family Foodbank Appeal for a fifth year to assist those who need support, and to fulfill the supermarket retailers promise to be "Here for New Zealand". As part of the initiative, running from April 8 to May 5, customers are able to visit their local New World, fill a bag with food bank-friendly products or choose a pre-filled $20 Family2Family bag, and drop it at the in-store collection point. From there, New World teams will deliver the donated items to the local City Mission or food bank. The supermarket retailer says the appeal is part of its ongoing commitment "to ensure New Zealanders have access to healthy and affordable food and to support local communities to thrive". New World's Head of Marketing Giselle Bleakley says each store's community roots make the campaign a great way to make a difference at the local level. "With every one of our stores being locally owned and operated, Family2Family is a great way for our people and our customers to give back and show their support for the local community," she says. Bleakley says New World will also donate $250,000 to support City Missions and local food banks across the country, and the campaign will last twice as long as previous years in hopes of providing greater support than ever before. "We're excited this year to be extending the length of the campaign to four weeks, with the goal of making more of an impact in our communities." The difference a donation can make Though $20 pre-filled bags will be available for purchase, New World is encouraging shoppers who are able to support, to put together bags of essentials that might not be entirely obvious. The supermarket retailer recommends donating non-perishable food items like canned foods, spreads, rice, pasta, cereals, baking essentials, tea, coffee, biscuits, crackers and cooking oils. Outside of the more obvious food items, New World also says City Missions and local food banks are in need of everyday toiletries such as shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, feminine hygiene products, toilet paper, nappies and essential cleaning products. Though the basics matter most, City Missions and local food banks also really appreciate small treats "such as biscuits or chocolates, which can provide a much-needed lift during challenging times". Bleakley says a donation worth $20 to Family2Family goes a long way, and everything from soaps to sweets can make a world of difference for community members with a difficult winter on the horizon. "Lots of people are doing it tough right now," she says. "And this is just one way we can help".
