Subj : Man suffers critical head injuries in 'serious' assault near Octagon

A 20-year-old man was hospitalised in critical condition after a serious
assault near the Octagon early this morning.


Emergency services were alerted to the incident on the corner of Princes St
and the Octagon in central Dunedin at about 3.15am.


The man was found unresponsive after being assaulted and falling to the
ground, a police spokesperson said.


He was taken to Dunedin Hospital where he is being treated for head injuries.


Police said his family is being provided with support.


"Police are reviewing CCTV from the area, however anyone who witnessed the
assault is asked to contact police by calling 105."
