Subj : Luxurious option unveiled for traversing Southern Alps by train To : All From : News Date : Wed May 01 2024 01:31 pm Travelling by train just got more lux. KiwiRail has revealed a new signature dining experience aboard the TranzAlpine train, which traverses 223km one-way through the Southern Alps and takes just under five hours. The new carriage experience named "Scenic Plus" has been designed with luxury tourism in mind, where passengers were treated to regional-inspired cuisine cooked on board, paired with local wines. Tracey Goodall from Great Journeys New Zealand told Breakfast they had seen demand for people wanting a "different experience". "Back in 2019 we received provincial growth funding, and we've been able to use that money to make some fantastic experiences," she said. "The entire experience is created around manuhiri... a visitor or guest that travels with you. Manu means bird and hiri means journey." She said the influence was in every piece of the purpose-built train carriages, such as panoramic viewing windows to take in the sights. She said people want "end-to-end experiences" that take them along the "spine of the country". "People want to go to regional New Zealand, they want to go to places like the West Coast, to Kaikoura, to Ruapehu and all the amazing places that you can get off the beaten track and that's exactly what our train line does." Goodall said a 17-day tour was one of their most popular, after being named by New York Times as the fourth best place to visit this year."People want to go to regional New Zealand, they want to go to places like the West Coast, to Kaikoura, to Ruapehu and all the amazing places that you can get off the beaten track and that's exactly what our train line does."
