A person has died after falling off a jet ski in Northland.


Police said the crash occurred on Friday afternoon just north of Ripiro Beach.


"Despite the best efforts of emergency services, the person died at the
scene."


Local iwi Te Roroa had placed a rahui in the area, from the entrance to
Baylys Beach to Glinks Gully, around the 2 kilometre mark on either side of
Maules Gorge and down to the water line.


"Local iwi and hapu would like to express their sincere condolences to the
family at this time," a police spokesperson said.


The rahui would be in place until 8am Sunday.


The person's death would be referred to the coroner, police said.
