I'm looking to do the same on this end.  I've been looking at the adafruit
neopixel options. The document on the site looks great and instructions seems
easy enough to follow.  I'll probably look at the multi light strips that I
can control which light to turn on or off and with what color.  It'd be nice
to assign a specific light or color to depict what action is being executed
on the board.
