I agree with both of you, somehow. One hand to Ryan's point, it always
seemed like they were stumbling into some new, unknown, and potentially
dangerous situation. On the other hand, you're right, death on the
Enterprise was rare and pretty much only happened to unknowns, and injury was
always temporary if it happened at all. Some grim-dark take on Star Trek
could focus on the huge amounts of "collateral damage" that goes by only
barely mentioned, but TNG is far from that show.
