A great idea and I have been puzzling over something similar.
The tidal thames has such varying conditions throughout the day that I thought
that a ladder would be more appropriate - you challenge the person on the
ladder above you and race side by side or one behind the other - then at least
course times would be removed - in the event of a dead heat then strava data
would be used to 'decide' the win.
Now puzzling over how to remove the difficulty of masters handicaps :)
